Yes: a car rented in Bogotá can take you to any city in Colombia. El Dorado is the country’s main international gateway, so many travellers land here, collect the car at the airport and carry on by road to Medellín, the Coffee Region, Cali or the Caribbean coast. Four conditions apply:

  • Nationwide driving, with no surcharge for leaving Bogotá.
  • Mileage: unlimited in and around Bogotá; on long trips a daily limit is agreed when you book, based on your route.
  • One-way rentals: you can return the car in another city, for a fee that depends on the distance, from US$143.
  • Colombia only: cars cannot be taken out of the country.

Estimates from several sources, without stops. Real times depend on traffic, roadworks and weather.

These are planning figures, not official ones. Before setting off, check road conditions with Invías, Colombia’s national roads agency, and live traffic in your maps app. Mountain roads here are slower than the distance suggests.

Bogotá to Medellín

The most direct route drops through Guaduas to Honda, in the Magdalena valley, and climbs through Puerto Triunfo into Antioquia: about 415 km with six tolls, according to Blu Radio, and 8 to 10 hours at the wheel. The Magdalena stretch is hot and busy with trucks, so leave at dawn. In December, Medellín is famous for its Christmas lights.

Bogotá to the Coffee Region

You leave Bogotá to the south towards Ibagué and cross the Central Cordillera through the La Línea tunnel, 8.65 km long and the longest road tunnel in Latin America, to reach Calarcá and Armenia: about 263 km to Calarcá. From there, Pereira, Salento and the coffee towns are under two hours away. In 2026 there have been closures and one-lane sections on the Cajamarca–Calarcá stretch, so check the road the day before.

Manizales can also be reached via Honda and Fresno, through northern Tolima. If you want to see all three coffee capitals, a loop saves you driving the same road twice.

Bogotá to Cali

It starts the same way as the Coffee Region route, via Ibagué and La Línea, then drops into the Cauca valley. Expect 440 to 510 km depending on the route and the source, and 8 to 10 hours in practice. A night in the Coffee Region turns it from a slog into part of the trip. In December, the Feria de Cali runs from 25 to 30 December.

Bogotá to the Caribbean coast

Cartagena and Santa Marta are 900 to 1,100 km away on the Ruta del Sol, 14 to 18 hours of driving. It is not a drive to do in one go: split it over two days and drive only in daylight. If you are not coming back by road, returning the car on the coast saves you the return leg; tell us the city when you book.

Sample itineraries if you are flying in

  • Bogotá and Boyacá, 5–7 days: the city, the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá and two nights in Villa de Leyva, back to Bogotá. See driving from Bogotá to Villa de Leyva.
  • Bogotá, the Coffee Region and Medellín, 8–10 days: pick up at El Dorado, head down to the Coffee Region, up to Medellín, and drop the car there before flying home.
  • Bogotá, the Coffee Region and Cali, 8–10 days: the same start, ending in the Cauca valley with a drop-off in Cali.
  • To the Caribbean, 12 days or more: with stops along the way and a drop-off on the coast.

Tips for long drives in Colombia

  • Drive in daylight. Mountain roads have bends, fog and trucks; at night everything is slower.
  • Carry cash for tolls, which are charged in each direction. Those leaving Bogotá are in tolls leaving Bogotá by car.
  • Fuel is sold by the gallon, not the litre.
  • Medellín and Cali have their own pico y placa driving restrictions. Check them on arrival, as in Bogotá.
  • Roadside assistance: full-coverage insurance includes 24/7 assistance anywhere in Colombia.
  • Data from day one: a Colombian SIM card with data is free, so you have maps without roaming.

How to book a long road trip

Send us your dates, your full route and the city where you want to return the car on WhatsApp: with that we confirm the daily mileage limit and the one-way fee before you pay. You can book as little as one day ahead if a car is available; in high season, earlier is better. For a long trip with luggage or family, see our cars for road trips from Bogotá. The essentials of airport pickup are in renting a car at Bogotá airport.

The figures in this guide were verified against official sources on the update date. Tolls and rates are adjusted every year.
